A Nourishing Blend of Cassava, Coconut, and Palm Sugar Wrapped in Tradition
In Bonjeruk Village, breakfast doesn’t always begin with rice. Instead, local families often start their mornings with Celilong, a traditional dish made from cassava, fresh grated coconut, and palm sugar. Simple yet satisfying, Celilong offers a naturally sweet and savory flavor profile while providing energy for the day—a comforting reminder that wholesome food can come from the land right outside one’s home.
Cassava and coconut trees thrive in Bonjeruk’s fertile soil, making Celilong a perfect reflection of the village’s agricultural abundance. For generations, the art of transforming cassava into a variety of delicious snacks has been passed down from Bonjeruk’s ancestors, preserving culinary heritage with every bite.
A Simple Recipe Rooted in Wisdom
Creating Celilong is a beautifully straightforward process guided by tradition:
- Cassava Preparation
Mature cassava is peeled, grated, and then tightly squeezed to reduce moisture and remove its natural sharpness. This step ensures the perfect texture for the final dish. - Fresh Coconut
A young-but-mature coconut is grated and mixed into the cassava. This specific age of coconut is essential: young enough to remain soft when eaten, yet mature enough to deliver a rich, savory flavor. - Palm Sugar
Finely shaved palm sugar—or coconut sugar—is added to the mixture, creating a balanced sweetness that complements the earthy cassava and fragrant coconut.
These three ingredients are combined into a simple, hearty dough.
Wrapped in Nature, Steamed to Perfection
Celilong is traditionally steamed using banana leaves, abundant in every home garden across Bonjeruk. The leaves are cleaned, cut into sheets, and prepared as natural wrappers.
A generous spoonful of the cassava mixture is placed onto each banana leaf, which is then folded neatly into small packets. These bundles are stacked into a steaming pot—dandang—and slowly cooked until the banana leaves turn glossy and deepen in color, signaling that the Celilong is perfectly done.
The result is a soft, aromatic treat infused with the subtle scent of banana leaves, offering a comforting blend of textures and flavors. Celilong can be enjoyed warm or cold, making it a versatile and beloved breakfast option for families across the village.
